The original split level entry was confusing to the arriving guest. It wasn't clear if one was to go up or down the stairs. Additionally there was a partial wall dividing the entry area from the main living area. There certainly wasn't a sense of arrival once inside the front door.
After our extensive remodel, arriving inside this home is a delight to the artistic eye and there is no confusion where to go. JS Design + Build designed tapering stairs so that the guest is "funneled" up the stairs from the larger opening at the entry landing to the main floor. Your eye continues upward to fall on the new recessed art niches and the abstract painting by Gregory Deane (represented by Martino Interiors in Los Gatos, CA). Smaller width stairs lead down to the cozy media room.
Note the vertical portions of mixed metal railings duplicate the tapered detail of the stairs and are open so that the eye travels upward unobstructed. Local artisan Andrew Bradford from Copper Iron Designs worked with us in creating this strong architectural detail.
