This living room was a dramatic before and after! The space had few windows, was only open to the entry hall through an insignificant doorway, it had a wall of old cabinetry and sheet rock walls. Additionally it had an old planter box from the 1970's with an oculus opening over it. The living room also lacked good traffic flow, any interesting architectural details nor was it playing up the magnificent views of the Napa Valley available to this Yountville property. The existing home was nothing like the southern Mediterranean home our client envisioned.
Architecturally, JS Design + Build completely re-envisioned this space. We opened the area up to the entry hall, creating gracious curved limestone steps accented by a curved coffer above it, created arches to receive the "store front" style steel windows, installed a new cast stone fireplace surround and overmantle. The cherry wood floors were installed piece by piece by a master craftsman in the Versailles style with herringbone with mahogany inlays. The coffered ceiling was designed to hide a steel support beam. We completed the Mediterranean look with Venetian plaster walls.
For furnishings, we incorporated items the homeowners had purchased while living in Europe with some new additions. We covered a Century Furniture bergere chair with a hand blocked silk in a grape leaf motif. The seating area is anchored with a beautiful Stark area rug selected from their San Francisco showroom. A gorgeous bronze and glass chow style cocktail table from Kolkka adds a more transitional styling to this traditional space. Upholstery details include a wonderful deep fringe on the sofa base, a cut velvet from Kravet Couture and a silk plaid from Beacon Hill on the pull up chairs.
